Dragon Force: “The Greatest Story Hardly Ever Told”
I remember walking into a local game store one day in 199X and being drawn to the magnificent box art inside the oversized Sega Saturn jewel case. The game was called Dragon Force, and it would become one of the unsung gems of the underappreciated Sega Saturn console.
It’s been close to 30 years since Dragon Force was released, and it remains one of a kind. There is nothing quite like it gameplay‑wise, but what really stuck with me after all this time is the music. The character themes are fantastic and really give the game replay value.
Most of my inspiration for this project comes from hip‑hop, particularly boom bap style, but there are also trap, lo‑fi, R\&B, new jack swing, French house, jungle, and vaporwave influences as well.
I titled this project “The Greatest Story Hardly Ever Told” because while Dragon Force is a relatively unacknowledged classic, it did receive a sequel and a remake. To this day, they remain Japan‑exclusive, which I consider to be one of gaming’s biggest “punches to the gut.”
In a world where even Bubsy is getting a new game, Dragon Force deserves a remake, remaster or re‑release!
